Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability in the US (Whiteneck, Cuthbert, Corrigan & Bogner, 2016; Capizzi, Woo, Verduzco-Gutierrez, 2020;) and worldwide (Iaccarino, Carretta, Nicolosi, Morselli, 2018). Outcomes after a head injury are heterogeneous depending on the type and severity of focal brain damage, diffuse axonal injury and a secondary cascade of multidimensional neurometabolic events (Madikians & Giza, 2006; Werner & Engelhard, 2007; Pearn, M. L., et al. (2016). It has also been increasingly recognized that biopsychosocial, contextual and temporal pre-injury, injury and post-injury factors have an impact in the long-term outcomes of TBI (Forslund, 2019) with a more significant impact in mild TBI patients (Marshall et al, 2018). TBI symptoms can persist years (deGuise, 2008) and decades post-injury, defining TBI as a chronic condition (Wilson, 2017).

Although more evidence is needed, neuroregulation tools may be promising approaches to improve the functional recovery of TBI patients, comprehensively.

In this workshop, an overview of TBI’s pathophysiology and the multiple factors that influence recovery will be provided. The assessment of sequelae and brain dysfunction through EEG, QEEG, neuropsychological assessment and validated scales and questionnaires, will be described and common findings will be discussed. The importance of a comprehensive assessment will be highlighted considering it leads to an individualized treatment plan, a more accurate monitoring of functional improvements and a pre- and post-intervention objective comparison. The personalized intervention includes the implementation of neurofeedback, photobiomodulation, cognitive neurorehabilitation and lifestyle recommendations for an improved outcome.

This class will take place over three 2.0-hour sessions:

Learning Objectives
1) Recognize injury and non-injury related factors that influence long-term recovery from TBI and acknowledge clinical heterogeneity
2) Understand the clinical value of a comprehensive assessment for defining an individualized treatment plan
3) Develop an understanding of the current evidence supporting the clinical application of neurofeedback and photobiomodulation as part of a comprehensive management
4) Understand the assessment and management of patients with prolonged TBI symptoms through clinical examples

About the Instructor:

Tanya Morosoli, MSc, BCN, Neuropsychologist obtained her Degree in Psychology from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, a master’s degree in Neuroscience from Barcelona University, Spain and a master’s degree in Clinical Neuropsychology from the European University Miguel de Cervantes.

She completed a postgraduate program on Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (PPCR), from Harvard Medical School in 2013 and was invited to collaborate as Teaching Assistant (TA) and Senior TA for 5 years in this Clinical Research educational program, currently offered by Harvard School of Public Health. She was Mexico City Site Director of this course (2019-2021).

Founder and Director of a Neuropsychology Clinic in Mexico, she leads a multidisciplinary team which provides comprehensive assessment and treatment. She has used neurofeedback for the past 20 years and recently started a practice in Switzerland where she is studying a comprehensive Medical course and an advanced one year Bio & Neurofeedback course in order to be accredited by Swiss health insurances. She was trained in QEEG by Barry Sterman, she has been BCIA Certified in Neurofeedback since 2008 and she is part of the faculty who teaches the Neurofeedback BCIA didactic course in Spanish, a Neurofeedback postgraduate university course offered by the University of La Salle and the Mexican Society for Bio and Neurofeedback, and the Swiss Bio & Neurofeedback course. She has provided mentoring towards BCIA certification and for the development of research protocols in Neurofeedback.

She was founder member and Past President of the Mexican Society for Bio and Neurofeedback. She is founder and board member of the Biofeedback Certificate International Alliance-Hispanoamerica (BCIA-H) and has served on ISNR board as International Member-at-large for more than two years. In 2021, she was awarded the ISNR Presidential Award of Merit and the Joseph and Ann Marie Horvat Distinguished Service Award for accomplishing international collaboration. She is associate editor for Neuroregulation.
