TEMPEROMANDIBULAR JOINT Paul Canavan, Ph.D.
DISORDER (TMD) SUITE
Temperomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of problems characterized by a dull, deep orofacial pain typically in front of the ear, the muscles of mastication, the masseter in particular, or the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which can result in decrease in function and quality of life for the individual. Dr. Paul Canavan, professor at Northeastern University, brings his clinical knowledge and experience in physical therapy and rehabilitation to this suite for the treatment of TMD.
The protocols in this suite use surface electromyography (sEMG) to regulate and normalize muscle activation
and correct imbalances with the use of two EMG sensors. The assessment and training
practices included involve different series of tongue and mouth exercises. Instructions
are included within the protocol, for ease of use and increased efficiency.
